I Bear the Ashen Cross
I bear the ashen cross
   upon my brow:
The sign of sorrow, evidence of how,
O Christ, You won salvation
   for my soul.
The agony, the nails, the pain for me
You suffered there upon
  the cursed tree
That I might be from sin’s disease
   made whole.

How can I show my fervent love
   is true?
I’ll wear the cross upon my brow
   for You.

The cross of sorrow,
   yet of triumph bold
Now made of ashes, soon a crown
   of gold.
I wear it with sincere repentant sigh.
Made right with God the heav’nly     Father, now
I boldly stand with ash upon
   my brow
And sing my praise to You,
   O Lord Most High!

How can I show my fervent love
   is true?
I’ll wear the cross upon my brow
   for You.

Another cross was placed
  upon my brow,
One giv’n to me at my baptismal vow
When made the Father’s child
   eternally.
Your cross became my cross
   upon that day
When all my many sins were
   washed away,
And I was cleansed, made guiltless,
   pure, and free.

How can I show my fervent love
   is true?
I’ll wear the cross upon my brow
   for You.

Ash Wednesday Comes
   and Lord We Hear
Ash Wednesday comes, and Lord,
   we hear
The word for which our spirits yearn;
Amid this world's distress and fear,
We hear your loving call: "Return!"

"Return to me with all your heart"
With fasting, weeping,
   mourning, too.
O God, we seek a brand new start,
A new beginning here with you.

Invocation
In the name of the Father and of the
   Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Confession
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.  Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your steadfast love;  according to Your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.  Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!

Bending from Thy throne on high,
  hear our penitential cry!

For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.

Bending from Thy throne on high,
   hear our penitential cry!

Cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Bending from Thy throne on high,
   hear our penitential cry!

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.
Amen.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite
heart, O God, You will not despise.

Bending from Thy throne on high,
   hear our penitential cry!

Savior When in Dust to Thee
Savior, when in dust to Thee
Low we bow the a - doring knee;
When, repentant, to the skies
Scarce we lift our weeping eyes;
O, by all Thy pains and woe
Suffered once for us below,
Bending from Thy throne on high,
Hear our Penitential cry!

Absolution
Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, does not desire the death of sinners, but rather that they may turn from their wickedness and live. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen

Psalm 102
Hear my prayer, O LORD; let my cry come to You!
Do not hide Your face from me in the day of my distress!  Incline you ear to me; answer me speedily in the day when I call!
For my days pass away like smoke, and my bones burn like a furnace. My heart is struck down like grass and has withered; I forget to eat my bread. Because of my loud groaning my bones cling to my flesh. I am like a desert owl of the wilderness, like an owl of the waste places; I lie awake; I am like a lonely sparrow on the housetop.

SING:
Jesus, refuge of the weary,
Blest Redeemer, whom we love,
Fountain in life’s desert dreary,
Savior from the world above:
Often have Your eyes, offended,
Gazed upon the sinner’s fall;
Yet upon the cross extended,
You have borne the pain of all.

All the day my enemies taunt me; those who deride me use my name for a curse. For I eat ashes like bread and mingle tears with my drink, because of Your indignation and anger; for You have taken me up and thrown me down. My days are like an evening shadow; I wither away like grass.
But you, O LORD, are enthroned forever;  You are remembered throughout all generations.
You will arise and have pity on Zion; it is the time to favor her; the appointed time has come. For Your servants hold her stones dear and have pity on her dust. Nations will fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth will fear Your glory. For the LORD builds up Zion; He appears in His glory;  He regards the prayer of the destitute and does not despise their prayer.

SING:
Do we pass that cross unheeding,
Breathing no repentant vow,
Though we see You wounded,
  bleeding,
See Your thorn-encircled brow?
Yet Your sinless death
  has brought us
Life eternal, peace, and rest;
Only what Your grace has taught us
Calms the sinner’s deep distress.

Let this be recorded for a generation to come, so that a people yet to be created may praise the LORD: that He looked down from His holy height; from heaven the LORD looked at the earth, to hear the groans of the prisoners, to set free those who were doomed to die, that they may declare in Zion the name of the LORD, and in Jerusalem His praise, when peoples gather together, and kingdoms, to worship the LORD.
He has broken my strength in midcourse; He has shortened my days. “O my God,” I say, “take me not away in the midst of my days—You whose years endure throughout all generations!”
Of old You laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish, but You will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away, but You are the same, and Your years have no end. The children of Your servants shall dwell secure; their offspring shall be established before You.

SING:
Jesus, may our hearts be burning
With more fervent love for You;
May our eyes be ever turning
To behold Your cross anew
Till in glory, parted never
From the blessed Savior’s side,
Graven in our hearts forever,
Dwell the cross, the Crucified.

Message                                          Psalm 102

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven,
     hallowed be thy name.
     Thy kingdom come.
     Thy will be done on earth,
        as it is in heaven.
     give us this day our daily bread;
     and forgive us our trespasses,
     as we forgive those
        who trespass against us,
     and lead us not into temptation,
        but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
     and the power  and the glory
     forever and ever.  Amen.

Your Table I Approach
Your table I approach;
Dear Savior, hear my prayer.
Let not an unrepentant heart
Prove hurtful to me there.

Lord, I confess my sins
And mourn their wretched bands;
A contrite heart is sure to find
Forgiveness at Your hands.

Your body and Your blood,
Once slain and shed for me,
Are taken at Your table, Lord,
In blest reality.

Search not how this takes place,
This wondrous mystery;
God can accomplish vastly more
Than what we think could be.

O grant, most blessed Lord,
That earth and hell combined
May not about this sacrament
Raise doubt within my mind.

Oh, may I never fail
To thank You day and night
For Your true body and true blood,
O God, my peace and light.

O Jesus Blessed Lord to Thee
O Jesus, blessed Lord, to Thee
My heartfelt thanks forever be,
Who hast so lovingly bestowed
On me Thy body and Thy blood.

Break forth, my soul, for joy and say:
What wealth is come to me this day!
My Savior dwells within my heart:
How blessed am I!
How good Thou art!
